Web Development Session 2023

In this online session, students from Grades 5-8 will learn HTML to create the content of their website, CSS to style the different elements of their site, and JavaScript for making their website interactive to usersStudents will follow along using the online IDE Replit. Additionally, throughout the course, students will be given challenges to check their HTML, CSS, and JS knowledge and give them more practice with each of the languages. At the end of the course, students will have the chance to create their own website to introduce themselves and express their creativity. This will be done with the assistance of experienced BASA mentors who will guide students through each step of the web development process. We hope to see you there!

July 15th - Aug 5th (Every Saturday), 7 pm - 9 pm

Curriclum

Day 1: 

  • Introduce course content and mentors

  • Kids each do a quick introduction

  • Students join their Replit teams

  • Start HTML section

  • Students use Replit to create a website with an image, paragraph and a link

  • Challenge: Students use HTML attributes to change the width and height of their image

  • Start CSS section

Day 2:

  • Students use CSS to change color and font style of elements on their website

  • Finish CSS section

  • Students add margins, padding, and borders to the elements of their website

  • Start the More HTML and CSS Section

  • Students add more tables and lists to their page

Day 3:

  • Finish More HTML and CSS section

  • Add flexboxes and use them to center justify text within elements

  • Start JavaScript section

  • Students try creating variables, objects, and arrays in JavaScript

  • Students use JavaScript to modify HTML elements

  • Challenge: Students create a button that changes the image on their website

Day 4:

  • Finish JavaScript section

  • Quick review of HTML, CSS, and JS

  • Students develop an About Me website with the help of mentors

  • Students demo their websites

  • Debrief of the camp

  • Talk about future camps BASA has planned

Q: Where does this camp take place?

This camp will be online on zoom!
 

Q: What kind of skills will my kids learn at the session?

By the end of this course, kids will learn how to create their own website. They will be able to create the website's content, format it, and add functionality using JavaScript.

Q: Is there a meeting for parents before the session?

No, there is no meeting for parents, however, parents are welcome to stay in the online Zoom meeting.

Q: Do my kids need to install anything before the session?

No, we'll be using the online IDE Replit, which they will be able to code on without installing anything. However, if your kid wishes to use a different IDE they can install that before camp.

Q: How many spots are available for the camp?

Since we are online, we are able to accommodate more, up to a limit of 25 spots for the camp.

Q: Are there any other camps planned for the future?

Yes, we are planning to have more CAD camps in the future, check back on this website for updates.
